Hundreds of New Yorkers are celebrating the start of the Lunar New Year in Flushing, Queens. Fox Five's Ashley Rodriguez was at the annual parade today and has a look at the Year of the Rabbit.
It's the start of one of the biggest celebrations in the world. The eve of the lunar new year, and Main Street in Flushing, Queens is drenched in red and decorated with rabbits. More than one billion people worldwide celebrate the lunar new year, marking the holiday with rich cultural traditions that originated as far back as 3,500 years ago in China. Tonight is New Year's Eve, so the tradition is to have the whole family eat together.
The outlook for 2023 is optimistic. It's the year of the rabbit, the fourth of all the zodiac animals and considered very lucky and this very peaceful, very kind animal so we consider it will be a nice year. Wishing you good luck and a great new year. People packed their bags with gifts for the parade, handing out tokens and trinkets meant to grant good fortune. People hand out red envelopes on the Chinese new year full of money. Red symbolizes happiness, energy and good luck. And when you wrap your money in it, it bestows blessings and happiness on the receiver. Each person at the parade I spoke with was proud to pass down and partake in tradition. Look how pretty that is. Embracing this country while honoring their ancestral identity. It's pretty nice because like you can feel like, yeah, I'm American. That's really nice, but I could also feel like I like how like my parents like they came along and like how they celebrated their life and cultures.
